In the winter season, the Arizona Nordic Village hosts a groomed trail system for cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and fatbiking. Many miles of hiking and biking trails leave right from the Village, and there are numerous other activities nearby, including the Lava River Cave, Red Mountain, Arizona Snowbowl, the Arizona National Scenic Trail, and many other hiking and biking trails. Frontcountry yurts and cabins are available for those seeking easy access, and five backcountry yurts offer solitude and natural settings with more comforts than a typical backpacking adventure. Perfectly situated in the cool pine and aspen forests at 8,000 ft of elevation between Flagstaff and Grand Canyon National Park, the Village offers rustic cabin and yurt rentals year-round, and summer campsites that are RV-friendly. Stay in a yurt or cabin at the AZ Nordic Village, a premier outdoor recreation destination just north of Flagstaff. Please take great caution when driving this stretch of the highway in inclement weather. That's where the majority of vehicle accidents take place. Second, I-40 gets extremely slick during winter storm conditions in the stretch of highway between Flagstaff and Ashfork. I-40 has a couple not so great features that are good to know about. Make sure to check road conditions and traffic reports prior to embarking on your journey. There is often bumper-to-bumper traffic when there is an accident or construction on this highway, which unfortunately happens pretty often - especially in inclement weather. I-40 is the main East/West artery that goes through Flagstaff. I-40 Traffic Warnings and Road Conditions If you plan on going to Arizona Snowbowl Ski Resort, they will require 4WD, AWD or chains to go up to the ski resort when it is snowing or if Snowbowl Rd. 4WD, AWD and chains are useful to have if you plan on driving during a storm. Munds Park tends to get icy and slick, so definitely slow down on this stretch of your drive. If there has been a recent snowstorm, this is where you should start taking caution. But winter road conditions don't usually get real until you pass the Stoneman Lake Road exit on the I-17. Sedona also gets some snow every now and then, which just makes for a stunning view. You usually won't have to worry about winter road conditions this soon in your drive, but always check for winter storm and weather conditions before heading north. ![]() Snow can be seen as far south as Prescott, but typically it falls in the higher elevations of the mountains. Winter Conditions It's hard to believe, but yes, Arizona gets snow and Flagstaff can get a lot of it. ![]() That's your best window, otherwise, traffic is often bumper to bumper and can add 1-3 hours to your time on the road. We recommend that you travel north on a Friday night after 7pm or before 9am on Saturday. You can count on traffic starting on the I-17 as far south as Black Canyon City if you leave on a Saturday after 9am on a 3-day weekend.
